Instagram Might Finally Let Users Post Photos and Videos From Desktop

Eleven years. That’s how long Instagram has been around, and for the entire time, there was no decent web or desktop version — at least, none that allowed users to create a post.

It might change very soon. According to Bloomberg, Instagram has begun testing this feature, which allows users to post photos and videos from their desktop browsers.

Christine Pai, a Facebook spokesperson, confirmed the news to Bloomberg. “We know that many people access Instagram through their computer. To improve that experience, we’re now testing the ability for Instagram users to create a Feed post using their desktop browser.”

Instagram’s web app is currently quite basic, allowing you to log in and view other users’ posts and stories, as well as send messages, search for posts, and view their activity logs. However, the ability to post is still missing.

When I tried it out, it wasn’t active. However, social media consultant Matt Navara, who revealed the feature first, shared a couple of screenshots on his Twitter feed.

According to Navara’s screenshots, the posting feature is very similar to the mobile version, with the ability to choose filters, tinker with settings such as brightness, contrast, and saturation, add a caption, set location, and toggle commenting on and off.

The logic behind not allowing users to do this for so long was rooted in Instagram’s roots as a mobile app that allows users to share their experiences as they happen.
